Private indoor spa at Casa Glèsia SPA, softly lit

Tarn · Occitanie · from autumn to the end of winter

Autumn and winter weekend in the Tarn

The Gaillac vineyards after the harvest, medieval villages without the crowds, and a warm bath waiting for you: outdoors under a covered terrace, or indoors between stone walls.

The idea

The season when the Tarn is all yours

From autumn to the end of winter, the Tarn settles back into its own rhythm. The grape harvest winds up around Gaillac, the lanes of Castelnau-de-Montmiral empty out, and the mornings are clear over the vines.

A weekend in November, January or February is not planned like a stay in August. You don't come for the pool. You come to walk through a medieval village and meet hardly anyone, to taste the wine where it is made, then come back and slip into warm water.

The bath does have to be properly usable when it is cold or raining, though. Ours are, in two different ways: a sheltered outdoor hot tub, and an indoor spa.

Private hot tub at Lou Pitchoun under the covered terrace

Outdoors, under cover

Lou Pitchoun: the hot tub under a covered terrace, in Gaillac

Lou Pitchoun, classified 3★, is a 25 m² cottage for two in the middle of the Gaillac vineyards. Its private hot tub (jacuzzi) is outdoors, set under a covered terrace: you can enjoy it in the rain as well as under clear skies, in the depths of winter as well as in August.

The temperature is adjustable, and in winter you turn it up. The tub is shared with nobody and there are no time slots: go in the morning, or in the evening once night has fallen over the vines. Bathrobes, bed linen and bath towels are provided.

Gaillac is 5 minutes away. Everything is set out on the Lou Pitchoun page.

Indoors, within stone walls

Casa Glèsia SPA: the private indoor spa, in Castelnau-de-Montmiral

Casa Glèsia SPA is an 80 m² medieval loft for two, at the foot of the Romanesque church of Castelnau-de-Montmiral, one of France's “Plus Beaux Villages”. The private spa is indoors, in a room of its own: it can freeze or pour outside, and it makes no difference.

The spa is warm when you arrive, with nothing to switch on, and you have access to it throughout your stay. You set the temperature to your liking. We regulate the heating of the loft remotely: if it is too warm or too cold, a message is all it takes.

The heart of the village is pedestrianised: the arcaded square and the stone lanes are at the foot of the loft. See the Casa Glèsia SPA page.

For a group

Lo Canto: a former wine cellar for six, outside the pool season

For a family or a group of friends, Lo Canto, classified 4★, sleeps up to 6 guests in a 120 m² 18th-century former wine cellar (chai), in the middle of the Gaillac vineyards. The 60 m² living room is made for long meals around the table, and there are board games for the evenings.

To be clear: the pool at Lo Canto is open from 1 May to 30 September, and closed from 1 October to 30 April. In autumn and winter, you come here for the space, the quiet and the vineyards, not for a swim.

When the pool is closed, children are welcome. See the Lo Canto page.

What to do in the Tarn in autumn and winter

The Gaillac vineyards — among the oldest in France. The wine estates can be visited without any complicated appointments, and Gaillac market is worth the trip on a Friday morning.

Castelnau-de-Montmiral — a 13th-century bastide (fortified town) perched above the Vère valley: its arcaded square, its church and its stone lanes are explored on foot.

Cordes-sur-Ciel, Puycelsi and Bruniquel — three hilltop medieval villages, about twenty minutes away. The Grésigne forest is right next door for a walk.

Albi, about thirty minutes away: Sainte-Cécile cathedral and the Toulouse-Lautrec museum, both UNESCO-listed. The right idea for a rainy day.

In December, the Christmas markets in Albi and Gaillac. And on Valentine's Day, out of season, the village is yours.
